Howling at the moon
Like a demented dog howling at the moon, so too I compose music; (don’t ask me, or the dog, why) and in this instance have come to the completion a set of 12 or so works, ostensibly for young students of strings and percussion. Written over a period of almost seven years, some of them were even commissioned, but most were, I now see, in effect, me howling at the moon….expressing god knows whatever inner necessities, emotions, or maybe simply regressing psychologically through the medium, or excuse, of either music for my students, or the various ensembles I conduct, but really for, well, one always imagines it may speak to the deeper, simpler part of the ….. (pardon me, there I go howling again) ….whoever.
The first work in this set (of this millenium) was “A Playground Groove”, and it is somehow appropriate that I have completed the process with this one….and there you go, it is now done. Having now completed the process of editing and revising all the works, one of course has a vague urge to get them out there, to be played, and shared…..how, why…who knows…any ideas?

Ok, why can’t I hear the howling? Or the barking……are you [barking, I mean]? To me, its obvious, a performance in a playground, out of doors on a weekend afternoon. Spring is coming, so is summer – both good times for music and howling.
