….the cycle has turned… the year is new, -and rebirth!
A new year, and I have returned from the wilderness (two and a half weeks spent in the wilds of Wollombi, building dry stone walls, and powering through as I compose the concerto for double bass and orchestra -big sections from the four movements are now complete). I return to my “Winds of Change” project (a set of fairly huge pieces scored for sax, oboe/cor anglais, bass clarinet/piccolo, electric viola, piano, bass and percussion x 2) ….the aim; -to get this show on the road….be warned, you will be posted!!
Stylistically, these works are ambient groove, subtly jazz-oriented compositions, with gentle contrapuntal lines, contrasted with improvisation and outbursts of Stravinsky-like writing for winds and percussion; -overall the closest description I can think of would be ‘an ECM Label sort of sound/space’…. well, sort-of, if you know what I mean……….
